So... what is a three day art intensive?
It is a wonderful experience where students are able to spend un-rushed dedicated time learning how to draw. They are taught not only how to draw but I am able to witness many young artists gain confidence, skills and understanding. It is incredible to see what my students can create in three days with quiet, calm, and affirming instruction and an open creative heart! Three days of instruction. At least 6 hours of in-class creative time. Skills that can be folded over into your everyday life and education. The skills that I teach build on each other and encourage students to see the subjects they are drawing in a completely different way. I am passionate about teaching children to draw what they see - not what they think. The exercises in the 3 day intensive all lead into that concept! This is how the 3 day intensive is usually set up.
Day 1
Upside down drawing
Negative space chair drawing
(2 hours per class)
In this class we will work on seeing things differently. We work on shifting from left brain to right brain thinking. This is probably the hardest class for most students to begin with but typically by the end they are really seeing!
Evening optional: Free draw time, nature hike with journaling, parent art time, or indoor nature notebooking
(1-2 hours)
Day 2 -
Drawing birds in basic shapes and blocking in hard subjects to make proportions realistic
Adding fine details
In this class we work on seeing shapes within the subjects we are drawing. I have a special method that makes it especially easy and understandable for children to learn.
Evening optional: Free draw time, nature hike with journaling, parent art time, or indoor nature journaling
(1-2 hours)
Day 3 -
Detailed nature journal entry through drawings, words and numbers
In this class your child should have the skills and confidence to make a complete nature journaling page! I will help your child process their observations by having them verbally narrate what they observe and I will dictate for them.
Evening optional: Parent roundtable talks
-art and nature instruction
-achievable goal setting and strategy
-troubleshooting problems
In this class I will teach students how to block in a bird with basic shapes in the right proportions which is key in making drawings look realistic. I have a special technique that really help students see shapes instead of just details.
* I am liberal with praise and positive and sensitive in critiques. I believe in quiet, calm, and affirming instruction. Instead of "Yikes, it looks like we need to work on this part." It sounds more like, "I really like how you noticed the highlight in the eye, I love you captured that in your drawing. With your finger can you show me which way the beak is pointing? Let's try and put your finger on your paper in the same direction. Oh you see it? The beak is angled this way! Great observations! Can you try and capture that in your drawing?"

How much does this all cost?
The base price is $2,300 + expenses (airfare to the closest major airport IS included in that price though). I typically suggest that there is around 30 students in an intensive so that comes out to $77 a student.
What are extra expenses?
Extra expenses include:
Transportation to and from the airport on location. (You do not need to pay for the transportation for me to go to our local airport in Wisconsin) and any needed during the intensive.
Lodging (a private room with a door)
Food during the intensive
Anyway we can get around these expenses?
Yes! I have stayed with a host family for all of the intensives that I have taught. They provide meals, lodging and transportation. I suggest the host families do not pay for their own children partaking in the intensive. Instead they should spread out those costs among the other students. Also another big perk of being a host family is your children have way more one on one time with me. I love to spoil host families with extra lessons, nature walks, extra art time, and sincerely pouring into their children.
What are the host families responsibilities?
As I explained earlier transportation, lodging, and food are typically their responsibility but the host family is also responsible for promoting and signing students up for the intensive and collecting the payments. They are also responsible for finding a place to hold the intensive (often their home.)
What supplies do we need?
One extra large drawing board with clips per child in the largest class. So if you have three classes but your largest class has 10 kids in it you will only need 10 boards. Typically the host family purchases them all and then they are dispersed and paid for by the students partaking in the intensive.

This really isn't a frequently asked question but...
Who all comes with you?
I am a mother of seven children and I always let one child come with me to each intensive! They are a helper but it is just some great special time with their mom. (Don't worry about having to have two rooms, we don't mind bunking together!) We will talk beforehand because I love to pair up one of my kids that would likely really get along with one of your kids!
What are the class size and age recommendations?
My official recommendation is 8 -10 students per class. (2 hour classes) There are 3-4 classes per day in the intensive so that means that up to 40 students can be enrolled. Classes are for ages 8 and up. Some exceptions can be handled but I find it hard for even some 8-10 year olds to focus for two hours. You know your children the best!
I have more than 40 students that want to attend. Can we add more classes?
Yes, you can! We many need to do some customizing to your intensive. I would likely need to bring another adult along so it would be more expensive. Contact me for a custom quote!
